South African Educational context
“Schools are falling apart, there’s a shocking lack of
sanitary facilities available, overcrowded classrooms, problems of unqualified
teachers, disciplinary issues, violence in school, and more (Rehema, 2022).”
The South African Education system has many problems that hinder it from
producing quality and sustainable education. Without these flaws, the education
system would thrive and have more impact that is has right now.
Dipiction of one of the state of the disturabance of quality education SDG in South African Education system
Education in South Africa today is curriculum driven. It's
is driven by an intended plan on what learners should be taught. Learners are
taught and prepared to be able to get entry into higher institutions of
learning. The education system does not prepare learners to be critical
thinkers and does not equip them with 4IR skills for them to be able to
function and be equipped for this world that is now in the 5th industrial
revolution and is technology driven. The implications of this kind of education
is that it is producing learners who are unequipped and lack not only 4ir
skills but other skills that are needed for the current state of the country.
This kind of education also contributes to the unemployment in South Africa. If
there is no university acceptance, what skills are learners equipped with by
the education that they receive in South Africa in South Africa to create their
own employment that is sustainable and successful if one is unsuccessful in
getting a job or doesn't wish to work for anyone else but themselves? The
education system in South Africa does not recognize or rather emphasize the
relevance of TVET collages as much as it does Universities. This results in
people being misinformed and seeing university as the only way to success hence
people who do not get a chance to be in university end up working mediocre jobs
or being unemployed because they did not consider TVET collages whereas these
collages actually equip its students with skills.
