South African Educational context

Image
“Schools are falling apart, there’s a shocking lack of sanitary facilities available, overcrowded classrooms, problems of unqualified teachers, disciplinary issues, violence in school, and more (Rehema, 2022).” The South African Education system has many problems that hinder it from producing quality and sustainable education. Without these flaws, the education system would thrive and have more impact that is has right now. Teacher researcher

Cochran-Smith & Lytle1993; 1999 define teacher research as an intentional and systematic inquiry of teachers with the goal of getting insights into teaching and learning, being reflective practitioners, effecting changes in the classroom or school, and improving the lives of children. A Teacher researcher is a teacher who is conscious about the present world but is also curious about the future and how they can equip their learners to be the best version of themselves and be able to function in the world after school. A teacher researcher is one who is always on their feet looking for information in order to better their teaching to benefit their learners. For example when we were going through covid-19, a teacher researcher was needed in order to find ways to teach effectively in that context and develop and enhance skills that are need...

Image
Covid-19 has come and gone. The education system has lived through it and continues to suffer its repercussions. With Covid-19, the education system embraced a lot of 4ir, technology and online learning. This brought about the need for technology literate students and emphasized the importance of 4ir seriously. This however highlighted the need for a teacher researcher who would come up with ways to deliver effective and relevant education to the crisis of Covid-19. It also highlighted the lack of resources in schools which made learning difficult as well as the development of technology literate students close to impossible. It highlighted the inequalities in South Africa where in schools and higher institutions of learning the have and the have nots were very prevalent in terms of who could access this online education and continue to learn. Covid-19 has also shown the possibility of many jobs being done remotely and this is the direction that a lot of employment has taken, if ...
